Food in Sweden

Princess cake is a famous Swedish dessert with layers of vanilla cake, cream, berry compote, and a green, marzipan coating. It is very sweet and a perfect treat for a warm day or holiday dinner!

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I always love trying new things, so trying these foods made me feel excited and comfortable at the same time. The kanebulle was sweet and made me feel relaxed while drinking my coffee during afternoon fika. The meatballs reminded me of a home-cooked meal. The princess cake felt festive and like something you would eat during a celebration! All these foods helped me feel more connected to Swedish society and gave me a better understanding of Swedish culture.

How is the food prepared?:

Kanelbulle is prepared by rolling dough with cinnamon and sugar, then baking it until it is soft. It is very similar to how you would make a cinnamon roll in the USA! Swedish meatballs are made from ground meat, shaped into meatballs, and cooked with gravy. They are then served with mashed potatoes and a lingonberry sauce. Princess cake is made by layering sponge cake, berry jam, and cream, then covering it with green marzipan and a coating of powdered sugar.

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

Yes, the food is connected to the local environment! The most clear connection is with the lingonberries that are served with Swedish meatballs. Lingonberry is a red berry native to Sweden and other Northern regions. However, warm and sweet food items are common in Sweden. Given the long, cold, and dark winters, hearty meals play a crucial role in lifting people's spirits during the winter months.
