During my time in Sweden, I had the chance to try one of the country’s most beloved treats: the cinnamon bun, or as it’s called in Swedish, kanelbulle. It's a staple of Swedish culture and a must-try for anyone visiting the country!
I tried the classic Swedish cinnamon bun, known for its soft, fluffy texture, with a delicious filling of cinnamon and sugar, and often topped with pearl sugar. It’s a food that Sweden takes great pride in, and it’s commonly enjoyed during fika, a Swedish coffee-break tradition.
I felt both excited and comforted! The warm, spiced aroma filled the bakery, and biting into the fresh, soft cinnamon bun made me feel like I was really immersing myself in Swedish culture. It was both a new experience and a comforting one, with the cozy flavors of cinnamon reminding me of home.
Cinnamon buns are prepared with a dough made from wheat flour, butter, sugar and yeast. The dough is rolled out and spread with a generous layer of cinnamon, sugar and butter, then rolled up and sliced into individual buns. These are then baked until golden brown and often topped with crunchy pearl sugar for an extra touch of sweetness. The buns are traditionally baked in stone ovens, giving them a perfect texture.
