Would you like to know what life is like for a Japanese college student? Here are some fun facts about my friend and life in Japan. Read on to find out more!
My name is Reren Kato. My parents really like Hawaii, and I was named after an instrument that's really popular in Hawaii. Can you guess which instrument that is? If you said, "ukulele," you got it right! The "rere" part of my name comes from the "lele" part of the word "ukulele". In Japanese, there is no "l" sound, so "r" is substituted for "l." So my name is "Reren" instead of "Lelen."
I live in an apartment on my own in Tokyo. When you enter my apartment, there is a "genkan," or a small place inside the entrance of a home where people can remove their shoes. You can remove your shoes there when you enter and place them in a shoe cabinet on the side of the genkan. After the genkan, I have a bathroom on the right and a kitchen on the left after the bathroom. The kitchen, living room and bedroom are all combined in one room.
