When the Spanish arrived in Mexico many years ago, they did not treat indigenous people very well. In fact, the Spanish deeply hurt many native communities in Mexico and tried to take away their cultures, lands and languages. It was only through the willpower of indigenous ancestors that fragments of their cultures, lands and languages were able to survive in Mexico. This history of keeping indigenous cultures alive adds to the importance of preserving them.
Why is language important to you?
Cuando los españoles llegaron a México hace muchos años no trataban muy bien a los pueblos indígenas de México. De hecho, los españoles a menudo lastimaron profundamente a estas comunidades y trataron de quitarles sus culturas, tierras e idiomas. Fue sólo por la fuerza de voluntad de sus antepasados lo que permitió que fragmentos de sus culturas, tierras y lenguas permanecieran en México. Lo que se suma a la importancia de preservarlos.

The need to preserve Mazahua culture and language is being met, in part, by having Mazahua teachers come to schools and teach. Community teachers also offer classes to anyone who is interested. And, of course, people protect and honor their ancestors by participating in their culture and speaking their language.
