When I first tried to get around, it was awkward. Back home in Texas, I did not use public transportation. I had my own car instead. Using public transportation was not popular in our city, so I was not used to using it. I had to get a T-Card, which can be used on the train, the buses and even to buy things in the convenience store. I had to learn how to read the maps, routes and transfers. It was overwhelming in the beginning, but after some time in Seoul, I got used to it. Still, I prefer to use taxis to get around since taxis are very cheap here and they are easier.
The way people get around in Seoul is connected to both the culture and the environment. Seoul is a very crowded and fast city. Public transportation fits the lifestyle here because it is quick, organized and simple. Many people live, work and study in busy areas of the city. It makes sense that buses and subways are commonly used instead of everyone driving their own cars. Seoul also has tight neighborhoods, heavy traffic and many places that are close to walk to. This makes walking, biking, taking the subway or using taxis ways to move through the city. Compared to my home in Texas, cities are more spread out and cars are more needed. Seoul’s transportation shows how the city’s culture is shaped by convenience, speed and easy access to different areas.
