I went to a friend's house in the south of Trinidad for Diwali. Diwali, or the festival of lights, celebrates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. During this time, we lit deyas, which are clay bowls that you fill with oil, ate lots of food, and met with her family members as we traveled from house to house to eat their food and sweets.
The most beautiful aspect of Diwali was that the deyas were lining the streets and people's homes. They illuminated the dark night, as it was the darkest night of the year.
I read up on Diwali and the meaning behind this Hindu holiday.
It has been too rainy to play any sports outside, but I go to the gym on campus and play basketball. It is interesting to meet new people through sports like basketball.
I went to a Diwali festival with a friend on Saturday night, and we ended up getting henna tattoos on our hands. These will last for two weeks, as they are not permanent. I think they are very beautiful, and in the Hindu culture, henna symbolizes good luck and positive spirits.
