RTW connected scientists at sea with classrooms across the U.S., but the expedition didn’t end there!

Metal racks are used to hold the round half cores so that they don’t roll over
To look closely at the cores, the scientists used small magnifying glasses, known as hand lenses, to see the smallest details
Some of the samples needed to be drilled out with a small rock saw.
After each sample was scooped out, they were stored in bags for preservation
Lining up several different cores next to each other allowed scientists to examine stretches of geologic time
