Palaces!

Journal Entry:

Palaces are a very important part of Korea because they represent the country's rich history and legacy. In the past, palaces were once occupied by rulers and emperors of Korea when it was under a monarchy. However, now, palaces are available to the public to visit and learn more about the context of the palace and its history.

There is also traditional clothing that is typically worn to the palace, called the hanbok. You will see many people wearing hanboks when visiting palaces, and most palaces also allow you to go into the palace for free if you are wearing a hanbok. Typically, you would get a hanbok at a local hanbok rental place where there are many hanbok styles and colors from which to choose. After getting dressed, women get their hair done and are accessorized with purses, and men are given traditional Korean hats called gat.

When I went to Jeonju, a place well known for its long history, I was able to see the palace that housed the rulers during the Joseon dynasty of Korea. Besides the palace, Jeonju itself is a very beautiful historical village with traditional Korean houses as well, which are known as Hanok. This Korean architecture also dates back to the 14th century, during the Joseon period.

At the palace itself, we learned more about the history of the palace and rulers.
