Sokika is all three names of each drum in one.
To create each drum takes a lot of time and patience: using animal skin, selecting wood, designing, painting and manually stitching the animal skin on top of the drum. Drums are known as male or female by their pitch, meaning if a drum has a low pitch, it is considered male and if a drum has a higher pitch, it is female. What's most fascinating is that we don't know if the drum will be male or female until it is created.
As a dance performer, I have never known the full history of drums or what it takes to create them. Now that I have this knowledge, I have a better understanding of what it takes to make each drum sound amazing!
