Interview with a Fifth-Grade Student

They give us pap and beans most days.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

I speak Sepedi at school, but we learn English, too. I am trying to be better at English. In my language, we say "thobela" (toe-bell-aa) to say hello.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

A lot of kids have the same names. All of our names have meaning. Common names are Neo, Rethabile, Thabiso, Karabo, Tsepo and Naledi.

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

At school, I study math, Sepedi, English, life skills, natural sciences, technology and social sciences.

What is your homework like?:

The teachers give us homework from our workbooks. Every day, we have homework.

What do you like to do after school? Do you have a favorite sport or game?:

After school, I like to dance and play with my friends. My favorite sport to play is netball.

Who is your favorite famous person?:

My favorite famous person is Shandesh. She makes a lot of songs I like.

What kinds of music do you listen to?:

I like Amapiano.

What would you like to be when you grow up?:

When I grow up, I want to be a teacher. 

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?:

I want to go to America.

What do you know or think about the United States?:

I think a lot of people have a lot of money, and everyone has a job. I also think people are very nice.
