Typically, from December to May, Belize is in its dry season. However, most of the month has brought cloudy days with scattered showers and chilly nights. When the sun made an appearence, it was bright, warm and tropical as usual. Most days, you could have sun, rain, wind and clouds--all in the same hour!
First and foremost, the rain always brings fire ants! As their name suggests, their bites bring a burning pain, and as the flooding forces the ants out of their nests and above ground, human homes must deal with the unwelcome invasions.
With each new Christmas party, I met sweet dogs, a black cat with her kittens and plenty of small geckos that feast on the insects breeding in rain puddles.
Saturday, I saw two beautiful yellow-bellied birds perched on my neighbor's windowsill. From where I was standing, they reminded me of the bright marshmallow Peeps sold during Easter. I can't say for sure, but if I had to guess, they might have been great kiskadees. I also enjoy the lovely coos of the Inca dove.
