What It's Like to Be a Kid in Australia

What is your house like?:

We have a one-story open-living house with a backyard and a front lawn. Australians are obsessed with their front lawns and always try to make theirs look the best. In the morning and afternoon you can almost always hear someone mowing their lawn.

What chores do you have at home?:

Chores I have at home are doing the dishes, vacuuming, folding laundry and cleaning my room. Most Australian families have dishwashers, so taking out and putting things in the dishwasher is a normal chore.

What jobs do your parents have?:

My mum works as a part time sales co-worker at a big Swedish furnishing company and my dad works as an IT professional for a computer company allowing him to work from home. Working at home is not common but it is convenient for our family.

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

My school starts at 8:20am and ends at 2:45pm. We have two breaks called First Break and Second Break. First Break is at 10:30am to 11:00am. This is when we eat our lunch. Second Break is at 1:00pm to 1:30pm. At this time we eat remaining food in our lunch box like sweets, muesli bars and yogurt. In both breaks we get 10 minutes to eat and 20 minutes to play. There is a bell to remind us when to play and when to eat. Most students in my school believe that 30 minutes is not enough time to play a proper game or finish our entire lunch. Me and my friends normally stay in our eating area to eat and chat when the play bell goes.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

I get to school by car. My parents drop me off in the morning and pick me up in the afternoon.
