Planes, trains, buses, and cars in Geneva

The most common way is via the metro system. The equivalent of this system in the United States is the subway system in New York, but there are a lot of differences between the two! First, the metros here are above ground, unlike the subways that go below ground. In this way, the train carriages look a lot more like trams, travelling alongside cars and bikes and buses. Speaking of buses, people also use them to get around in Geneva. The metro covers the main routes through the center of the city, while various bus lines serve the smaller, farther-out areas of the city. Both the metro and buses are always very clean, quiet — and prompt!

One interesting feature is that you do not have to show your ticket when you get on board most forms of transportation, here. You can just jump on the metro or a bus as long as you have purchased a ticket. The traffic police hold random checks to make sure that people respect this rule. They can fine you up to $200 if they catch you without a ticket! I always make sure to renew my monthly pass before climbing on board.

Other than public transportation, a lot of people will use bikes to get around. People like to ride their bikes through the countryside, but also to get around in cities. Each day, you can see both businessmen and students alike riding bikes to work. Similarly, people like to ride motorcycles a lot more here. You can always see bicycles parked right alongside motorbikes!

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

When I first arrived, it was really strange to see the metro trans traveling in the streets right alongside cars.
