The main languages spoken here are Spanish and English. Many of the locals here speak at least a little English, because of the large tourism industry in La Paz and international activity in the city. When I realized in 2019 that I wanted to study sharks and mantas, I realized I would spend a lot of time working in Latin America! I started learning Spanish then, and mostly use Spanish in my daily life now.
The currency of Mexico is the Mexican peso! The exchange rate fluctuates, but usually the equivalent is around $1 USD to $20 Mexican pesos. Unlike the U.S., Mexico's bills are colorful and have some nationally important animals printed on them.
A bottle of water usually costs around 17 pesos, but I try my best to never buy them and always refill my reusable water bottle before leaving the house.
The best meal this week was one of my favorite foods of all time... chilaquiles! Chilaquiles are made with tortilla chips, cheese, red or green sauce, cilantro, onions, eggs, and crema, which is like sour cream. They are basically breakfast nachos, and one of the things I miss the most when I'm not in Mexico.
