At home, I eat potatoes often with my family. When I moved to Spain, I was excited to get to eat a potato-based Spanish food I'd had only once before while studying abroad: tortilla de patatas or tortilla española!
Tortilla de patatas or tortilla española (Spanish omelet, or literally tortilla of potatoes or Spanish tortilla) is a food made of eggs and slices of potato. It's circular and about an inch or so thick, and served in triangular slices like a cake. It's eaten with a fork, served warm, and is usually considered a tapas (appetizers or small meals with a drink).
When I first tried tortilla de patatas, I wasn't sure about it at first because I don't usually eat eggs. I ended up loving it! You can't really taste the egg, which is masked by potatoes and olive oil. In my mind, the egg is used as a sort of glue just to keep the tortilla de patatas from falling apart. It's really filling and a great comfort food!
