I also enjoyed shopping in the feira. Feira means market. There were so many vendors selling jewelry, art and leather goods. I enjoy shopping for interesting, hand-crafted cultural products. In general, I enjoy spending my money on pretty things that are unique.
This week I read about a famous Brazilian author named José Martiniano de Alencar. His books Iracema and O Guarani are both about interracial romance and make the reader think about what it means to be a Brazilian, where race is a big issue. In the books, the two partners are European and indigenous Brazilian. The chapter I read discussed how this Brazilian identity is complicated because of the history of the country.
