Community Center

Introduction:

Where do you usually go for afterschool sports or classes? Some people go to a place called a community center for these kinds of activities. A neighborhood in Don Juan is currently working to gather the funds for their very own community center.

What community need did I learn about?:

I learned about a community's need for a community center.

Why does the community have this need?:

The community needs a center to hold their meetings and neighborhood councils, community and cultural events, as a refuge for natural disasters, to host Non-Governmental organizations, to host INFOTEC courses or courses from other institutions and to increase adult literacy. Currently, adults have to be taught literacy in the front patio of one of the neighbors' homes. Neighbors have to change houses depending on the day of the week.

Is this need being met? How?:

Community members have tried to meet this need by requesting funds from multiple sources: the municipal district of Don Juan, government of the province of Monte Plata, the provincial senatorial office and the Ministry of Culture. Some materials to construct the community center will be collected through donations, fundraisers (such as raffles) and by applying for a Peace Corps grant.
