Life in the Eyes of Chiko

Introduction:

Hi! My name is Chiko and I am a nine-year-old boy.  I live in Lilongwe, which is the capital of Malawi.

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

The staple food of my country is nsima, which is a corn-flour porridge.  I usually eat that with beans, chicken, fish or vegetables.  Sometimes I eat rice instead of nsima.

What is your house like?:

My house is small, and it is built from bricks and has a metal roof.  The kitchen is outside, and we use charcoal or firewood for cooking.  We have a tap with running water on the porch, so we fill buckets and basins to take water inside, or we take them to the side of the house where we wash our dishes and clothes.

What chores do you have at home?:

At my house I have to sweep the yard to collect trash and old leaves.  I also collect plastic bottles and other food containers from the neighborhood for my father to resell.

What jobs do your parents have?:

My dad is a motorcycle delivery driver and he transports things to people around town.  He also works as a gardener for our landlords.  My mother takes care of me and my four siblings and cooks and cleans.  Sometimes she makes doughnuts or scones to sell for extra money.
