federal government specifically to support students from low-income backgrounds who wish to study abroad. I would 1000% recommend applying for it if you can. My current year in Paris is very generously funded by the Fulbright U.S. Student Grant Program, which is a scholarship for graduate students and professional researchers, so that would be a little further in the future for you all, but good to have in mind. These kinds of applications are big and there are always essays involved; the earlier you start writing them the better, so that you have time to have a professor or advisor of some kind help you with them.
Work hard in school. Any kind of competitive scholarship application will, of course, consider your grades, the quality of your writing, the creativity of your ideas, etc. The more you can learn in school, the better chance you’ll have of things going well.
