When I can communicate with the people who live in a foreign city, I’m able to understand more about their daily lives, their families, their sports, their pets; in short, by speaking their language, I get a shortcut into their culture.
My daily routine in Khon Kaen, in addition to running a few miles, includes a short Thai language lesson, because I’m doing my best to learn the Thai language. It also consists of hanging out with friends both from Thailand and from other parts of the world. Every day, I teach several hours of classes, where college students ages 18 to 21 learn how to speak English. We learn English vocabulary and grammar while we practice speaking, writing, reading and listening. I enjoy spending time in class with my students. As I teach them English, they teach me about Thailand.
Although I’m on an adventure right now, I always feel the need to continue to find and learn from even more new cultures. Because of this, for the next year or so, I’ll be riding on planes, trains and automobiles around Southeast Asia, on a constant search for new and delicious food, wild and beautiful nature, and kind and welcoming people. I am so excited to share this exploration with your classroom. I hope that in our time together, I can accurately show how wonderful this country is, and pique your interest in traveling to Thailand one day! Until next time!
