Especially as the winter months approach, there’s less daylight and warmth outside. Due to Denmark being fairly north on the globe, the change of the Earth’s tilt causes the country to experience a more extreme winter season compared to most of the United States. Daylight is significantly reduced to around seven hours per day. To add on, the country is surrounded by multiple seas that bring in cold winds and clouds. This all comes together to limit the desire to spend time outside and engage with others. People thus experience increased feelings of loneliness and depression as they spend more time alone indoors. Rather than letting this be normalized, embracing hygge works towards limiting these unpleasant situations. The lack of warmth from the sun can be substituted with the soft glow of indoor lights and the company of loved ones.
