Spaniards work hard and are very social. The extra effort put forth in walking as opposed to driving a car doesn't bother them because they are resilient people. Also, walking with a friend or family allows them to have more time to talk and be social. The systems of public transportation are more related to the environment. It is very common to see metros and buses in more economically prosperous areas because that's where most of Spain's industry happens. In rural farmland there is much less availability of public services.
