People here use their bikes for everything including going to the store, going to school and even going to parties. So they don't like having to wear a helmet because it takes longer. They can't run errands and hop on and off their bikes if they have to stop and put on a helmet each time.
So, this need really isn't being met here. I understand that many Dutch people think that it's unnecessary and a waste of time, but I think that it's a matter of being safe. The only thing that's really helping meet this need for safety is that there are separate lanes on the roads for bikes here, so they're not usually going in between cars. This could make them safer, but they still should be wearing helmets. So, how can we get people to WANT to wear helmets, instead of trying to force them to?
