The title of this journal means “Great to meet you, my new friends!”
Hi! My name is Kate, and I grew up in New Jersey, near New York City. New York is an incredible place in the U.S., because when you walk from neighborhood to neighborhood, you hear tons of different languages, not just English! That’s because people from all over the world come to visit and live in New York City, and they bring their languages with them. When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time exploring New York and hearing many words I couldn’t understand, especially in Spanish. I’ve always loved puzzles, and that’s what Spanish felt like to me. I wanted to crack the code.
As you all know from Ms. Garcia’s class, learning a language doesn’t come easily! I worked hard in Spanish class, because in order to crack a code you need to understand the way it works. What fascinated me most about the Spanish language is how it’s so different from English in certain ways, yet incredibly similar in others. I wanted to know why that is.
