Bonjour! Hello! I’m Kate, writing to you from the bilingual city of Montreal, Canada. When you meet somebody here, you never know whether they prefer to speak in English or French. That’s why you hear a lot of “bonjour/hi”--the choice is yours!
I moved to Montreal to go to McGill University, and when I finished I decided to stay here to work. It’s a beautiful city, full of parks, street art, delicious food, and, of course, French! I’ve always loved languages, and the idea of learning French was a big factor in my decision to move to Montreal for my university years. At McGill, I studied linguistics: that's a field that focuses on how language works and why we’re all so good at it! And now that I’ve graduated, I use my linguistics background to teach English and Spanish, and to contribute to research about how children learn French when they move to Montreal from another country.
When I was growing up in New Jersey, I never expected that one day I’d move to Montreal! I lived close to New York City--I could see the skyline from my town--and I always thought I’d move there when I was old enough to live on my own. Maybe I will one day, but for now, I’m loving my Québécois adventure. I hope you will, too!
