Unfortunately, these furry friends don’t have homes. Instead, you can find them sleeping on top of cars or porch steps. Sometimes they can also be found in makeshift shelters set up by neighbors or shops.
Because the cats are strays, they depend on the humans here to survive! Whether it's food or a sort of temporary shelter during cold or rainy weather, the people of Thessaloniki do their part in taking care of them. There have been times when I’ve been walking home late at night and have seen some of my neighbors leaving out food in trays for the city’s cats to eat. These animals are not looked at as burdens but rather as community pets!
A problem these kitties face is starvation. Even though the community tries its best to look after the cats, there are way more cats than there are shelters. So, because of this, the city overall does its best the make the cats' lives peaceful as they can be! But because Thessaloniki is a very busy city, the drivers here are known to be reckless at times. This presents another major risk for the cats of the city, who can be easily injured by cars zooming down the road!
