Transportation plays a big role in shaping a city, and in Thessaloniki it’s no different! From taxis to buses to walking along bustling streets, there are many ways to get around. But what is most exciting and transformative is the city’s brand new metro system! Sleek, affordable and even driverless, this metro not only makes daily life easier but also connects the city’s modern growth with its ancient past.
Here in Thessaloniki people get around by using public transportation. With Thessaloniki being Greece’s second largest city (right after Athens), different ways to get around are almost necessary. While there are many taxis around the city, the metro tends to be the first choice when traveling in Greece’s "City of Love." Additionally, this subway system is quite new. It opened on November 30th, 2024, so it is about nine months old and it has already become an integral part of Thessaloniki! It is only six miles long, but it rides about 254,000 people everyday! The coolest thing about it is that it drives itself. Most subway systems require a driver to keep the train on its course, but not in Thessaloniki!
