Thessaloniki has a Brand New Metro System!

Just like walking around the city, some of metro stations, like Βενιζέλου (“Venny-Zeh-Loo” or Venizelou) or Αγίας Σοφίας (“Ah-gee-ahs So-fee-ahs” or Agias Sofias), are also built around ancient ruins from the Roman and Byzantine empires. These types of stations are called “Archeo-stations” because they discovered old historical artifacts and sites while the city was building the metro. In fact at both Agia Sofia and Venizelou, you can see the pieces of ruins on showcase. This display is symbolic of Thessaloniki’s rich history. It allows viewers to see the old city with the new in a unique way.
