American Apple Pie

Introduction:

I grew up with my grandmother making apple pie. My mother learned her recipe, tweaked it a little, and passed it down to me. Now that I am married I've learned to add something new into my apple pie recipe - sweet maple syrup!

What food did I try?:

I tried Maple Apple Pie. I picked the apples at an apple orchard and bought maple sugar to make a crumbly topping to the pie.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I was so excited! And a little nervous. I didn't grow up eating maple with desserts, but my husband's family did, so I tried to make something that was both our cultures in one dessert. Where his family would have had maple pie and my famiy would have have apple pie - together now we eat maple apple pie.

How is the food prepared?:

I made fresh pie crust by mixing butter, flour, sugar and salt. Then I let the dough rest while I cut apples and mixed them with maple syrup and lemon so that they wouldn't brown. I then but the apples into the pie crust and added a maple crumble on top and baked in my oven for about an hour.

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

I like to cook apple pie in the late summer and early fall because this is when the apples are in season.
