Murals and Graffiti in Oaxaca: Is it Art?

Is there a kind of graffiti that you like? Why do you like it?

Negative views about graffiti are also very common. Many people feel that if something is painted in a public place without permission, the artist should be arrested or fined. Graffiti can sometimes advertise unpopular opinions, or include swear words or other symbols that community members find offensive. Many types of graffiti have a particular style that might seem ugly or uninteresting to someone who is not the artist. In many places, when someone vandalizes a store with spray paint, that is also called graffiti. Are there times when you don't like graffiti? What are some of the differences between what you like and don't like?

Many of the murals on the walls in Oaxaca are political. They tell us how the artists feel about the government, tourists or other important issues like the environment. Graffiti and muralism have a long history in Mexico, being connected to the sharing of political views or to protests. Other pieces of graffiti are simply images that an artist designed and wants everyone to see on a large, public scale. What do you think when you see graffiti in your city? Are there different types of graffiti that share a message? If there are any murals in your community, what do you think they're about?
