Recognizing Different Perspectives

Living in Morocco was incredible but immensely challenging, and at times, even uncomfortable. Immersing yourself in another country and its culture can often feel that way. During my time in Morocco, I was able to develop relationships and connections with many different people. Through the people I connected with, I gained new and alternative perspectives.

For starters, I lived with a local family. My host mom and her sister, as well as their husbands and children, took incredible care of me. They made Morocco feel like a home. Although we had some language barriers, their actions taught me so much about them and the way they lived. They opened their home to me, a complete stranger! As I'm sure you know, that is not an everyday occurence in the United States. I experienced the generosity and kindness of Moroccans countless times while I lived there.

My thoughts and beliefs were also challenged daily by my peers. My program included eighteen other students from the United States. Some were just starting college, while others were quite a bit older than I am. We had all come to Morocco for different reasons. These eighteen other students were originally strangers, but they became some of my closest friends over the course of our time in Morocco. I learned from them as they shared their life experiences with me.
