The Natural Beauty of South Korea

Introduction:

The national flower of Korea is the Hibiscus syriacus, more commonly known as the Rose of Sharon. This flower is even mentioned in the Korean national anthem. The flower's Korean name is mugunghwa (무궁화). The flower's symbolic significance stems from the Korean word mugung, which means "eternity" or "inexhaustible abundance".

What does this creature or plant look like?:

The Hibiscus is a trumpet-shaped flower, about the size of your palm, that often can range in color from white to dark pink (almost purple). It is most commonly a light pink color. It has a white with a yellow tip stamen in the center of the flower, looking almost like the flower is sticking its tongue out!

How did I feel when I saw it?:

I thought this flower was beautiful. When I first saw the plant, I didn't know about its national importance. I just thought it was beautiful. I later learned how important mugunghwa is, and felt very happy that I had gotten to see it.

Where does it live?:

The flowers live all over the country and have even been taken and grown in gardens in Europe.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

The Hibiscus best grows in warm, sheltered places.
