The Land of the Morning Calm

Introduction:

From its bustling modern capital city of Seoul to the mountains that litter the country, to the small towns and widespread farm land areas, Korea is impressive for the diversity it contains, small though the country is (approximately the size of the state of Indiana).

What makes this environment special or different?:

This country was impoverished only a few decades ago, which goes to show it has made some amazing progress. Think of the progress, socially, technologically and structurally that has occurred in the US in the past 150 years since the American Civil War. Now imagine all of that progress happening in a matter of 50 years or so. Until the Japanese Occupation in the early 20th Century, Koreans were still living much as Americans were in the 1700s and 1800s. After the Korean Civil War in the 1950s, the country was left divided and war-torn. The Korean people old enough still to remember all of this history have, with the younger generations, fused modern and traditional thinking to create the rich Korean culture that exists today.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

The people have adapted to living in every part of this country. As of 2016, about 50% of the Korean population lives in Seoul, making it one of the top 50 largest cities in the world.
