La Paz's Mi Teleférico System

Introduction:

With a population of more than 2.3 million people, La Paz and the surrounding cities of El Alto and Vaicha make up the most populous urban area in all of Bolivia. This means that every Monday through Friday, the hundreds of thousands of professionals, university students and children living in La Paz need a way to travel to and from work and school. Many of the adults living in La Paz likely earn less than $9,000 USD per year. While cars do exist in Bolivia, they are quite expensive, especially for a person living on the average salary. Due to sometimes high import fees, cars in Bolivia can cost even more than the same car would cost in the U.S. despite lower salaries here. As a result, the millions of people living here rely on the city’s public transportation systems to move between their jobs, homes, schools and other activities every day. Luckily, in 2014, La Paz became home to one of the most efficient, high-tech and environmentally-friendly public transportation systems in the world. Read on to find out more about how people get around this bustling city!

How do people get around?:

There are many ways to get around La Paz: by car, taxi, bus, minibus, bicycle, motorcycle and even foot! But the Mi Teleférico—La Paz’s aerial cable car system—is by far the most popular mode of transportation here.
