Las Fallas de Valencia

Introduction:

Las Fallas is a must-see tradition that is specific to Valencia. While this festival attracts many tourists for its uniqueness and intensity, locals use this holiday break to travel away from the city. This is because during Las Fallas, the streets are lively throughout all hours of the night, with pop-up discotechs, teenagers setting off fireworks and live bands to name a few. Although the nights are restless for those staying in the city, the traditional practices that take place throughout this week are worth experiencing at least once. The time and effort that goes into every aspect of this holiday is highly commendable. I am excited to teach you more about this tradition and share my experience of Las Fallas this semester!

What tradition did I learn about?:

One of the main factors that led me to choose to study in Valencia as opposed to other cities in Spain, was the opportunity to experience their traditional festival: Las Fallas. This festival starts on the 1st of March and ends on the 20th of March; however, the main week of public events is from the 15th to the 19th. This week is considered a holiday, and because of this, we were given the entire week off from class as well as two days for sleep recovery!
