Travel is such a fascinating thing. There is something amazing about learning how the rest of the world is full of people that are just like us. Before you have your first international travel experience, you tend to see people from other countries as almost alien to us, believing we have little to nothing in common. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

As you make friends around the world, you learn that we’re all very much the same. Children in Africa, Australia, Russia, and everywhere else like many of the same things we do. Kids in Mauritius can often be seen playing soccer, just like we do in the United States. They play on playgrounds, they sometimes refuse to eat their broccoli, and they learn their ABC’s just like we do.

Some people looked at me a bit crazily when I told them I was going to Africa. Many were concerned that it would not be safe there. Others thought we’d be living in a field surrounded by lions and giraffes. We’re living a life that is very different from home, but it is also very much the same. I shop at a grocery store like I did at home, but I purchase different foods. I drive a car like I did at home, but I drive it on the other side of the road.

When we first arrived here, it felt as though everyone was staring at us all the time.
