Bonjour (that's "Hello" in French)! My name is Laura and I am very excited to meet you! I normally live in the mountains of North Carolina, but am currently in Africa--although you'd never guess it based on the location or the scenery! The tropical island of Mauritius is very far out into the Indian Ocean and is filled with lychee fruit, tortoises, beaches and steep mountains. Not what normally comes to mind when you think of Africa!
I worked in some interesting roles as a Registered Nurse before I came to Mauritius this past August. I worked in emergency rooms, disaster response and forensics. Last summer, I completed a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree with a concentration in global disaster relief, humanitarian assistance and homeland security.
I wanted to get some international experience, so I applied for and was very fortunate to be selected for a U.S. Fulbright Research Grant to study the prevention of a scary disease called diabetes on this island. My 13-year-old daughter Elizabeth (Lizzy) was even able to come with me. I am SO excited to share our journey with you! Let's go!
