Hello friends! Now I have been in Hong Kong for three months and have learned a lot while I've been here. The university I am located at, The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), is small, but there are many people from all over the world that live here. When you go abroad, or even when you are in your own neighborhood, it is very important to be respectful of the way other people choose to live.
On example of a difference that I have noticed is the different religious practices here, as Buddhism is the most common religion. On my first day here, one of my coworkers asked me and my friend if we needed to pray before eating. He was very kind and immediately created an open space to talk so no one would be uncomfortable. In this way, he was trying to be respectful of our beliefs, since he did not need to pray before eating. In the same way, my friends and I had to be very careful how we acted when visiting monasteries. Monasteries are religious places where monks or nuns live and worship. Here in Hong Kong, we visited Buddhist monasteries. Since they are sacred places to many, we had to keep our voices down and dress appropriately. These places were beautiful and we did not run around or cause any problems. It is a good idea to research and look up any rules to follow when you visit religious sites.
