Pimientos del Piquillo de Bacalao

Introduction:

Growing up, I have always heard about Spanish food. As someone who truly enjoys eating, I was excited about this part of my study abroad experience. I didn’t really know much about what food would be, as research was something I didn’t do prior to departing for Spain. The first night here, I ate at a Spanish tavern, and my favorite part was the olives. I could not get enough of the Spanish olives. They were sitting in a marinate of what I could describe as magical flavors. I have no idea what it was made of, but it definitely elevated olives to the highest degree. 

What food did I try?:

My favorite meal that I've had here, so far, is the pimientos del piquillo de bacalao. This translates to piquillo red pepper with codfish. It comes from the Basque region of Spain. A delicious dish that I would normally not choose for myself. I am trying to explore new cuisine and stepping outside of my comfort zone, and for the most part, I’ve been happy with this new mindset. Once in a while, I come across foods that I don’t like, but it’s rare. 

How did I feel when I tried it?:

The waiter himself told me that I had picked the best item on the menu. He described it by saying that my mouth would be watering, and it was the best thing I was going to eat in Spain! After eating it, I would say that he was not far off.
