Traditions to me mean culture. In my Cuban heritage, we have many traditions including festivals, food, and ways of communication. In the U.S., the most important tradition to me is celebrating my birthday. I love this day because it allows me to reflect on who I have become in the past year. I love to travel for my birthday and do something new.
In Spain there is a festival that has always interested me called La Tomatina. La Tomatina is more than just a food fight. It’s a celebration of fun, community, and Spanish culture. It shows that sometimes, it’s okay to get messy and just have fun together! The festival reminds people not to take life too seriously. Sometimes it's okay to drop everything, throw a tomato, and smile!
La Tomatina is a big tomato throwing festival that takes place in Buñol, Spain. It started in 1945 and has continued ever since. The event happens on the last Wednesday of August every year, and invites people from all over the world to join in the fun!
On the day of the La Tomatina festival, people gather in the main square of this small Spanish town and play a game called “palo jabon”. A large pole is greased and people have to climb the slippery pole in hopes of reaching the ham at the top.
