The church was supposed to grow even larger, but construction was halted when the Black Plague broke out in the 14th century. This half-way constructed addition of the church now stands a snapshot of a very important moment in European history.
This week I got to know my city a little bit more during my “stay-cation”. I visited a few more coffee shops, which they call bars here since Italians typically drink coffee quickly at the counter. I studied in the library near my home with its beautiful brick walls and colorful Italian books. And of course, I began making plans for my trip to Switzerland in early March, where I will take a train to Milan, visit the city for the afternoon, and train up to Lugano, Switzerland.
