Studying abroad is applicable to any career and field, as it demonstrates your ability to be independent, your desire to learn, and your will to challenge yourself. While overseas, you’ll meet different people and learn about the politics, the attitudes and the mindset of various individuals. These experiences can change and inspire you.
From personal experience, I know that one of the biggest factors that hinders people from studying abroad is the financial component. My biggest piece of advice in this regard is to always try and apply for any scholarships that you qualify for! There are many resources available on the internet that inform you about the different scholarships. If there are any scholarships that are local or regional to you (for example, scholarships hosted by or affiliated with your university/school, county, or city), you have a much higher likelihood of getting that scholarship! As a low-income student myself, money was the reason why I never thought I would be able to study abroad. However, since studying abroad was something I had always dreamed of doing, I spent hours on my computer looking for scholarships in order to make my dream a reality. If you are studying abroad and you are studying with a program, several programs often offer scholarships, as well. Therefore it’s important to do your research! A few scholarships that I recommend you investigate are the Benjamin Gilman Scholarship, Boren Scholarship, Critical Language Scholarship and the Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship (FEA). I was a Benjamin Gilman Scholarship recipient, and this scholarship supports needs-based students who are planning to study abroad.
