Most of the food I see originates in Japan. Fish and chips is the only time I ever see fries, and I'm guessing that is because fish is so common that the dish makes sense in a school with international students. There is always a choice of fish at lunch and dinner (sometimes at breakfast too), and almost all broth in Japan is fish based. This reflects how Japan is an island country— you are never too far from the coast.
The rice that we have everyday is grown in Japan, and I would not be surprised if it was grown right here in Akita, which is famous for its rice. Rice is a staple food of the Japanese diet and there are many rituals and festivals involving rice planting and harvesting.
