The water is some of the purest I have ever felt in my life and the air was so fresh thanks to all the greenery. When I ducked my head below the surface and saw all the fish swimming below, I had to come up quickly because the sight took my breath away.
The cenotes which facilitate this life and vegetation can be found throughout Mexico, but they're especially concentrated in the south.
The relatively closed environment of the cenote provides the wildlife within it a more consistent habitat and neutralizes some changes that the weather may bring with it. The water flows from deep underground and keeps a cool and consistent temperature that's usually somewhere between 72-78 degrees Fahrenheit.
Sunscreen and other artificial products can disturb the delicate balance of the cenote, so it's always very important to shower before entering. Continued deforestation of the Yucatecan jungles could lead to cenotes being destroyed, but in general, there is not a lot of worry about cenotes or their ecosystems.
