Cycling Culture

Having and maintaining bike lanes allows Dutch people to showcase these two sources of pride. The Dutch built canals to keep their land above the ocean water, something we will talk specifically about another time. Sometimes, these engineering features do not support or allow for cars or trains, so the Dutch chose to build the more practical bike lanes instead of car lanes or train tracks.

Since people are more likely to own a bike than a car in the Netherlands, the country creates significantly fewer carbon emissions when compared to other similar countries. From my experiences so far, I think that the Netherlands and its people want to maintain a clean and green environment, and one way for them to contribute is to continue their cycling culture. My bike and I are happy to participate!
