Cycling Culture

Introduction:

I work in a very busy area in Amsterdam. People are always moving and trying to carve a path to get to their destination. There are so many different ways to get around in the capital city of Amsterdam, as well as all over the country, but the Dutch peoples' favorite one is by bicycle.

The most convenient way to use public transportation in the Netherlands is to buy an OV Chipkaart (chip card). Once you buy the plain card you can apply for a personalized one. The personalized card allows you to buy passes with discounts so that you do not have to spend as much money on transportation as you might otherwise. People here try to live very frugally, which means they don't spend money if they don't have to. They are very practical and understand the power of a euro! You can see why a bike might be considered a great option.

How do people get around?:

The Dutch and those visiting the Netherlands can use several different forms of public transportation. There are trams (electric streetcars that run on rails), ferries (there's a lot of water), trains (which run all over the country almost 24 hours a day), the metro (subway, in larger cities), buses (same as trains, but they don't move as well during rush periods) and OV Fiets (bike rentals available at train stations).
