Germany's Annual Oktoberfest

Introduction:

In the same way we have big festivals and carnivals during the summer in America, Germany hosts a world-famous event in Munich known as Oktoberfest! Oktoberfest takes place during the Fall season, and millions of people from all over the world travel to Germany to experience the cultural traditions, foods and festivities on-hand at this time! Oktoberfest is one of the biggest and most fun parties in the world. The tradition of Oktoberfest begain in 1810, and there are no signs that Germans' enthusiasm for this festival is slowing down-- if anything, Oktoberfest gets bigger and more expensive every year! The only time the festival was canceled was in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (Also... isn't it funny how they spell October with a 'k' instead of a 'c'?)

What tradition did I learn about?:

Oktoberfest occurs in the southern city of Munich over the span of two weeks. The festival is full of parades, concerts, traditional ceremonies and dancing! Lots of people wear traditional German clothing, such as Drindl dresses for women and Liederhosen for men.

The festival starts off with a huge parade where the mayor taps the very first beer, and that's when all the celebration begins!
