Hi, explorers! I'm Madison, and I'm originally from Montgomery, Alabama in the United States. Living in such a historic city helped me to nurture my passion for archival work and to learn more about the generations that came before us. I graduated from Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama with a Bachelor's degree in history. Afterward, I earned a couple of Master's degrees in history and Applied Gender Studies from Claremont Graduate University in Southern California.
Currently, I'm working on my Ph.D. in African American and African Diaspora Studies at Indiana University, where my research focuses on how Afro-Brazilians respond to white immigration, particularly the influence of the Confederates' departure from the United States to Brazil after the American Civil War. Are you studying American history this year? This chapter of post-Civil War history is surprising to many people! As a Fulbright Program grantee, I've traveled to Brazil to visit archives, interview people, and learn all I can about this fascinating mixture of Brazilian and American cultures in the late 1800s.
Want to explore the past with me? Join this expedition to Brazil, and we se firsthand how the past influences the present, and how the histories of the United States and Brazil are more intertwined that you may think!
