Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

I traveled 160 miles by car and hiked a total of 40 miles.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

For my research, I have traveled 8,653 miles away from home in New York. That’s two flights totaling 24 hours of travel, just to arrive on the island. In Madagascar, I had to travel for five days to get to The Lost Forest. My work would not have been possible without support from Fjällräven, a popular Swedish outdoor clothing company, and the Explorer’s Club; both of these organizations which have funded my travel and field gear for my expedition to Madagascar. Organizations and institutions like Fjällräven and the Explorer’s Club help fund and promote scientific expeditions around the world, enabling groundbreaking research in faraway places. If you are interested in exploration, science, and nature, these (along with National Geographic) are valuable resources to get your adventurous career started!

How did I get around this week?:

By hiking! Hiking is our primary mode of transport in the forest. The nearest road is a three-hour hike away.

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

The small village of Manombo on our way up to The Lost Forest. We had to spend a night in the village to get permission from the elders to visit the forest and do our research.
