Hola class, it’s your friendly neighborhood Wildlife Biologist Marc checking in! The biggest source of income for Costa Rica is ecotourism. Ecotourism is tourism that is focused on showing people the environment and taking them to see plants and animals that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. The government and tourism board are focused on ecotourism, and Costa Rica boasts the most protected reserves and national parks than any other country in the world. Private reserves have become more common, as landowners can then charge tourists to come to visit their land and take them on tours. This means that the environment is extremely important to Ticos (the nickname of what Costa Ricans refer to themselves as).
Costa Rica is a special place with a variety of different ecosystems and habitats throughout the country. This is mainly due to the fact that it is situated close to the equator which means that there is very little change in temperature year-round. Costa Rica doesn’t have four seasons (winter, spring, summer or fall) like in the United States. Instead, they have a wet and dry season. The wet season lasts from May to mid-November, and the dry season is from mid-November to April.
